Fused aluminium oxide was first manufactured in the 19th century. The process of creating it involves smelting calcined bauxite and other materials in an electric arc furnace at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Celsius. Fused alumina has a value of 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, coming quite close to diamond with its Mohs 10 rating. Some of the other notable characteristics of fused alumina include a high level of shock resistance, outstanding load-bearing capacity and good thermal and chemical stability.

How Fused Alumina is Made

Fused alumina is made from bauxite, anthracite and iron filings. These ingredients are mixed together in appropriate proportions and then smelted in an electric arc furnace at extreme temperatures. The molten alumina produced by the smelting is allowed to cool and solidify before being crushed and graded.

Classification of Fused Alumina

  • Black fused alumina is made from low iron bauxite. It’s characterised by its hardness and low porosity. Black fused alumina is often used for grinding or polishing various metals.

  • Brown fused alumina accounts for more than 70% of all fused alumina production worldwide. It’s characterised by its extreme toughness and low friability. It is often used for grinding and cutting applications.

  • This type of fused alumina is characterised by its impressive temperature resistance and thermal shock resistance. You will find tabular alumina in places like the linings of high-temperature furnaces.

  • White fused alumina is made from highly pure alumina and is known for its hardness and durability. You’ll typically find white fused alumina in sandpaper, grinding wheels and various cutting tools.

  • Due to its purity, remarkable strength and excellent thermal and electrical properties fused alumina is often used in the production of advanced ceramics, including ceramic components used in electronic devices such as circuit boards and insulators. 

     

    Because of its high porosity and its ability to filter heavy metals and organic compounds fused alumina is also used in water filtration applications and water treatment devices. Some metalworking, construction and shipbuilding applications also employ fused alumina.
